These are just a few of the photographs taken during two trips to northern Nigeria - the first in November 2017, and then again in January 2018 - spending time with Peter Fretheim and being exposed to the work he is doing to rescue and rehabilitate women and girls, many who have been displaced, lost family, homes, loved ones, because of the crisis that has afflicted the northern states in Nigeria for the past ten years. Many of the photographs are too sensitive to publish as the people seen in them are still in transition, seeking refuge and safety. It's a difficult and worthy mission that Peter and his team are engaged in. Often, when things got a bit challenging, when I was in uncomfortable places or situations, I would stop and realize that I had an airplane ticket and passport in my backpack. I had enough money and the privilege to leave and return to the comforts of home. For the women and children I was photographing, this was their home and the world they lived in. There was no exit strategy or escape plan. Amidst the turmoil, poverty, and the real presence of terrorism, I met so many amazing hearts who accepted their role with resolve and gratitude. It is humbling to spend time with such people and places like this. I hope, as you viewed some of these images, you were moved to pray for these precious lives, and to be thankful for all you have, the blessings that overflow in our lives and we sometimes take for granted. - L.
