John raises his fist, as he and Tommy did during the gold medal ceremony at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
Their protest became the most dramatic medal ceremonies of all time. The image of two black American sprinters
standing on the medal podium with heads bowed and fists raised is one of the most memorable moments in
Olympic history and a milestone in America's civil rights movement .
